Hey, everyone! Have you planted your flowers yet? I put in something called Gazania this year, which rather resemble a miniature sunflower or daisy ... also, I'm trying algeratum for the first time. Does anyone out there have any experience with either? Sure would appreciate some feedback on this. (I don't exactly have a "green thumb"!)

So have a wonderful day, and enjoy this issue!

A Healthier You

My nephew just sent me the following about fruit ... some of it I'd heard before, some not:

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not so easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits? * Not eating fruits after your meals!
* Eat fruits on an empty stomach.

If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for dropping pounds and other life activities.

Fruit is the most important food. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so. In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.

So please eat your fruits on an EMPTY STOMACH or BEFORE your meals! You have heard people complaining—every time I eat watermelon I burp; when I eat durian my stomach bloats up; when I eat banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc. Actually, all this won't arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas—hence, you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outbursts, and dark circles under the eyes—all these will not happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits like orange and lemon being off limits because they are acidic, for the reason that all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton, who did research on this matter.

If you've mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice, drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't ever drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits, because you don't get the nutrients at all. You get only the taste! Cooking destroys ALL the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a three-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits, drink fruit juice throughout the three days, and you'll be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI — Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, Vitamin E and fiber. Its Vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE — An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low Vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of Vitamin C, thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack and stroke.

STRAWBERRY — Protective fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits and protects the body from cancer-causing, blood vessels-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE — Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent and dissolve kidney stones, as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON — Coolest thirst quencher composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. Watermelon is also a key source of lycopene, the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are Vitamin C and potassium.

GUAVA and PAPAYA — Top awards for Vitamin C. They're the clear winners for their high Vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene, which is good for your eyes.

A great affirmation:
I love the highest and best in all people.
I now draw to myself the highest and best people. Everything and everybody prospers me now.
I am the Pied Piper of success.

Feature Article

This is a continuation of an article that I started in the issue of April 28, talking about Proverb 3:5-6

The passage states to trust in the Lord . . . with all your heart . . .

Jesus sees your heart (what you truly are, what you really believe). Your actions demonstrate and reveal what you really are about, because you are capable of acting without first thinking. In fact, everyone moves and acts without consciously thinking every day—mindlessly, automatically, routinely.

Our conscious minds can override these automatic actions by free will changes of heart (by changing our minds) by purpose and intention and practice (as in one who is computer savvy versus a novice).

... and don't depend on your own understanding (what you know—or think you know—in your conscious mind). You learn to trust the Lord through your heart, not with your mind. What comes from your heart is your sixth sense—not quite a feeling, not quite intuition, it is that small, still voice—the whisper of the Lord, Who is in you.

With your mind, you put yourself into the right "place" to capture truth with your heart. (The belief that builds in your mind, precept upon precept, culminates in your realization of truth in your heart ... the "knowing" of truth.) You cannot trust your own finite mind to apprehend truth (lean not unto your own understanding). Time has disproved many scientific "facts," long held, popular, and irrefutable, e.g., the earth was flat, it was impossible for man to fly, etc., ad nauseum.

And, to an extent, the experts were correct, in that it WAS impossible for man ... alone ... but man is NOT alone! With God, all things are possible!

Finally, since we become what we think about (as a man thinketh, so is he), think on these things: whatever is good, noble, lovely, of good report). The implication is that we are NOT to dwell on their opposites.

Kind of like temptation. There is no sin in temptation (even Jesus was tempted), only in yielding to it.

... to be continued ...

How to Call the Police When You're Old
and Don't Move Fast Anymore.

George Phillips, an elderly man from Meridian, Mississippi, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me. Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock your doors, and an officer will be along when one is available." George said, "Okay."

He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he phoned the police again. "Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed ... Well, you don't have to worry about them now, because I just shot them," and he hung up.

Within five minutes, six police cars, a SWAT Team, a helicopter, two fire trucks, a paramedic, and an ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!" George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

True Story—I love it! Don't mess with old people.

A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition.

Today's English Lesson

Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue. Look for some of these lessons to be repeated, because the mistakes are!

"Wave" as a noun is a hand gesture or a water movement or a way to style hair. And it is also used to indicate a trend, as in the "wave of the future." And it can refer to weather, as in a "cold wave," or radio "waves."

"Wave" as a verb is the act of motion with the hand or perhaps a flag or any other object that is movable. "Waver" is used interchangeably with "vacillate."

"Waive" is to voluntarily relinquish one's rights to something. In legal terminology, it is set down as a "waiver."

There are more meanings of these words, but these are the most common usages.

Tribute to the United States
[This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.]

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the international lines except Russia fly American planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.

You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon—not once, but several times—and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at.

Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany, and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody lent them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to help the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America!

This is one of the best editorials that I have ever read regarding the United States. It is nice that one man realizes it. I only wish that the rest of the world would realize it. We are always blamed for everything and never even get a thank you for the things we do.

Inspiration

A Teenager's View of Heaven

Seventeen-year-old Brian Moore had only a short time to write something for a class.

The subject was what Heaven was like.

"I wowed 'em," he later told his father, Bruce. "It's a killer. It's the bomb. It's the best thing I ever wrote." It also was the last.

Brian Moore died May 27, 1997, the day after Memorial Day. He was driving home from a friend's house when his car went off the road and struck a utility pole. He emerged from the wreck unharmed but stepped on a downed power line and was electrocuted.

The Moores framed a copy of Brian's essay and hung it among the family portraits in the living room.

"I think God used him to make a point. I think we were meant to find it and make something out of it," Mrs. Moore said of the essay. She and her husband want to share their son's vision of life after death.

Brian's essay: The Room

In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room.

There were no distinguishing features, except for the one wall covered with small index card files. They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endless in either direction, had very different headings.

As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read "Girls I have liked." I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one.

And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was.

This lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn't match.

A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their content.

Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching.

A file named "Friends" was next to one marked "Friends I Have Betrayed." The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird — "Books I Have Read," "Lies I Have Told," "Comfort I Have Given," "Jokes I Have Laughed At." Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: "Things I've Yelled At My Brothers."

Others I couldn't laugh at — "Things I Have Done in My Anger," "Things I Have Muttered Under My Breath at My Parents." I never ceased to be surprised by the contents.

Often there were many more cards than I expected. Sometimes fewer than I hoped. I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived.

Could it be possible that I had the time in my years to fill each of these thousands or even millions of cards? But each card confirmed this truth.

Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.

When I pulled out the file marked "TV Shows I Have Watched," I realized the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn't found the end of the file. I shut it, ashamed, not so much by the quality of shows but more by the vast time I knew that file represented.

When I came to a file marked "Lustful Thoughts," I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed content.

I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded. An almost animal rage broke on me. One thought dominated my mind — No one must ever see these cards! No one must ever see this room! I have to destroy them! In an insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn't matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards. But as I took it at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it.

Defeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh.

And then I saw it. The title bore "People I Have Shared the Gospel With." The handle was brighter than those around it, seemed newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.

And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that they hurt. They started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key. But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him.

No, please not Him. Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus. I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards. I couldn't bear to watch His response. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own.

He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes. Why did He have to read every one? Finally He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn't anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands, and began to cry again.

He walked over and put His arm around me. He could have said so many things.

But He didn't say a word. He just cried with me.

Then He got up and walked back to the wall of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one began to sign His name over mine on each card.

"No!" I shouted rushing to Him. All I could find to say was "No, no," as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn't be on these cards. But there it was, written in red so rich, so dark, so alive. The name of Jesus covered mine. It was written with His blood. He gently took the card back.

He smiled a sad smile and began to sign the cards. I don't think I'll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side.

He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, "It is finished." I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There was no lock on its door. There were still cards to be written.

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." — Phillipians 4:13 NIV

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." — John 3:16 NIV

My "People I Shared the Gospel With" file just got bigger, how about yours?

You don't have to share this with anybody, no one will know whether you did or not, but what do you feel in your heart?
