A Healthier You

The Air We Breathe

If you live in today's "civilized" world, you know that the air we breathe is not what it once was.

Sometimes you can smell the toxins in the air, more often you cannot.

Air purifiers designed to improve the air in our homes help somewhat, but they do not go far enough.

Inside air can be up to ten times worse for you than the air outside. Mold, pet dander, and plant pollen can combine with chemicals, like radon and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), to create a pretty toxic environment in your home, and since we spend an average of 90% of our time indoors (65% of our time inside our own homes), according to the National Safety Council, that can add up to allergies, asthma, and worse.

This is because contained areas enable potential pollutants to build up more than open spaces do. Visualize dumping a gallon of oil into the ocean versus dumping a gallon into your bathtub. The oil in the ocean will dissipate and be diluted within the massive volume of water. That same oil in your bathtub will linger, because it has nowhere else to go.

Today's building construction makes our homes nearly air tight. And while that's good for our utility bills, it is quite the opposite for our health.

Things that contribute are the chemicals used in making furniture, carpeting, paint, cleaning materials, etc. I remember walking into a furniture store years ago, and immediately my eyes started burning, to the point that I was forced to leave. The same thing happened a few years back when I tried to enter a mobile home that had been closed up. Not good!

Soon . . . very soon . . . probably in the next issue . . . I will be talking to you about a very real way to make the air inside your home fresher than mountain air! Just stay tuned! :-)

Who seeks for heaven alone to save his soul may keep the path, but will not reach the goal; while he who walks in love may wander far, yet God will bring him where the blessed are.

Whatever Happened to Hymns?

Most of you probably know that I regularly tune in to TBN Christian network to learn, worship, and just plain enjoy. When did you last hear "Blessed Assurance"?

What you may not know is that, when I first started tuning into that station, I would hear beautiful praise and worship music, which consisted mainly of the old standard hymns. When did you last hear "Come and Dine"?

Try tuning in today. Yep, you guessed it! Only rarely do we hear the good old hymns. Most of the time you would think that you had tuned into a secular station. I've actually checked to be sure that I was tuned in to TBN, because I couldn't believe some of the junk that passes for Christian music today. When did you last hear "He was Nailed to the Cross for me"?

I know, I know. Some of you are thinking the old lady's full of sour grapes. Not really, but when I am ready for real worship and praise, I do not expect to be bombarded with so-called "Christian" rock music. How can it be called "holy"? We are to be "in" the world, not "of" the world. If we offer nothing different for our young ones, how are they ever to know the difference? When did you last hear "Prayer is the Key to Heaven"?

Today's stuff draws attention to the singer more often than not. God is not deaf either, and He warned against vain repetitions, which most of that stuff is. There is plenty of rock music they can tune into without overrunning the Christian station with it. When did you last hear "Washed in the Blood"?

But unless you happen to catch one of Benny Hinn's crusades or "Unfolding Majesty," only rarely will you hear really good praise and worship music on TBN anymore. When did you last hear "The Royal Telephone" or "Trust and Obey" or "Power in the Blood"?

There was power in those dear old hymns; there was majesty and glorious worship in them. They stirred both soul and spirit; they invigorated. They focussed on the Lord. They reached the heart of God.

Two-Minute Management Course

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was.

The dung was actually thawing him out. He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.

Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Management Lessons:

1 — Not everyone who dumps on you is your enemy.

2 — Not everyone who gets you out of deep do-do is your friend.

3 — And when you're in deep do-do, it's best to keep your mouth shut!

This ends your two-minute management course.

Is not marriage an open question, when it is alleged, from the beginning of the world, that such as are in the institution wish to get out, and such as are out wish to get in?

Today's English Lesson

Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue. Look for some of these lessons to be repeated, because the mistakes are!

Would you believe this one? . . . Someone just won "apart" in a play! If you do not see anything wrong with that sentence, then you need to learn that "apart" means separate from or it can mean to set aside something.

Or "apart" can mean to disassemble something, or it can refer to time, in the sense of "Our birthdays are two days apart."

"Apart" cannot be used in the sense of a role in, or a piece of, something. A car part is just that . . . a part, or part of a car.

I believe this is akin to using "alot" when you mean "a lot." People know there is such a word as "allot," but they just have not taken the time to learn that "allot" means to measure out a portion of something.

9 Tips to Help You Write More Powerful Emails
by Suzan St. Maur

Writing emails seems so easy and quick, anyone can do it without giving it a second thought. But by rushing it carelessly, are you wasting a useful opportunity to promote yourself and your business? Professional business writer Suzan St. Maur shares her top tips on how to make your emails much more powerful . . .

1 — Make the effort to learn about the etiquette (these days known as "netiquette") involved in writing emails. There are loads of good reference websites and books about the internet which will tell you the basics. I know it might seem a bit precious to attach so much importance to social niceties when the internet is basically very informal. However, whether we like it or not many people do take online etiquette very seriously. So if you're writing emails for business, you should assume that your recipient may well be one of those . . .

4 Ways In Which You Can Achieve Critical Mass
by Jack Humphrey

Critical Mass Website Promotion is the elite goal rarely attained by website marketers in any industry. Reaching critical mass and getting targeted website traffic on autopilot (meaning you don't have to promote your site for six months and the traffic NEVER declines) is the Holy Grail of Internet marketing.

When you hit critical mass in your market, things change drastically for you and your business. Your marketing efforts go down in direct proportion to your customer support and sales going up. It sounds awesome. It IS awesome. But only a tiny fraction of websites on the net ever achieve critical mass. Here's a nutshell version of what it takes.

1 — Work Hard.

Internet marketing is no game to be manipulated by using software and quick fixes to a very large problem, which is long-term, steady traffic coming to your site.

There is no magic pill, silver bullet, or quick guru secret that will help you to achieve critical mass in your market. Hard work and intense study of the Internet and how people surf, what they want, and how you get in front of them while they are surfing is the only answer.

The Internet marketing game is for professionals and you MUST make yourself a professional marketer of your "shop" just as you would in the real world.

2 — Understand Your Market.

Understanding exactly who you are selling your products or services to is the crucial first step in achieving critical mass.

The worst thing you could ever do is put the hard work in and achieve critical mass in the wrong market for your products and services!

Know your market. Know your best, ideal customer inside and out. Get your links in front of them, ideally, everywhere they surf for related information to your site.

3 — Be Vigilant.

Over the years I have watched people listen to what I have to say about website promotion and then take one of two paths:

a — They work their tails off and do what I tell them, with great results and rewards for their efforts (more sales, more traffic, more branding and recognition).

b — They buy my book, take a half-hearted shot at the easiest things in the book, get bored, tired, or impatient, and then they go back to chasing down quick fixes.

I have watched people who had the answers they needed in their hands, and drop them for more glamorous-sounding, fast solutions. Which we all know don't work.

I will say this again — There is no way to to quickly or instantly achieve critical mass in your market!

You must work like anyone in business who is in it to succeed works. If you do not know everything about your business and how to market it, your competition will eat you alive because they WILL know everything, I guarantee it.

Just like in the real world, the one who works harder, smarter, and is vigilant about his or her business is going to come out on top every time.

You owe it to yourself and your family to learn your craft and do it better than most people in your market if you want to succeed.

4 — Achieve Critical Mass.

In order to hit critical mass, you must be everywhere, or nearly everywhere your best customers surf.

This means linking back to your site from reciprocal links, articles, press releases, joint ventures, forum participation, and good search engine positioning for your best keywords.

In order to have literally thousands of links pointing to your site in high-profile areas where human beings actually go and read/surf, it takes pure time and effort.

You must submit your articles to the best free content directories. Over and over until you have published everywhere you can that is relevant to your market.

You must secure deals with high-profile sites in your market to swap QUALITY links. I am talking about links that people will click on, not just links that only search engines will see.

You must be everywhere that is a good place to be on the net in your market. This takes time. This takes hard work. This is what it takes to have a viable, long term website traffic solution for your business.

Reaching critical mass, or even sitting down and deciding a plan of action to pursue critical mass in your market, takes maturity and a final realization that you can have anything you want in the world if you want to work for it. The day you stop chasing quick fixes to drive spurts of unqualified, un-aimed for traffic to your site is the first step in achieving your goals as a professional Internet marketer.

Grandma's Hands

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn't move—just sat with her head down staring at her hands.

When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence, and the longer I sat I wondered if she was okay.

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her, but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was okay. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking," she said in a clear, strong voice.

"I didn't mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands, and I wanted to make sure you were okay," I explained to her.

"Have you ever looked at your hands," she asked. "I mean really looked at your hands?"

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands, as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story:

"Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled, and weak, have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life.

"They braced and caught my fall when, as a toddler, I crashed to the floor.

"They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war.

"They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band, they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special.

"They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse.

"They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.

"They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well, these hands hold me up, lay me down, and continue to fold in prayer.

"These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life. But, more importantly, it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when He leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side, and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ."

I will never look at my hands the same way again. But I remember when God reached out and took my Grandma's hands and led her home.

When my hands are hurt or sore, or when I stroke the face of my children and husband, I think of Grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God.

I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.
