Published every Tuesday

Well, good evening everyone. As you can see, this is going out a bit late. The demands of property management sometimes can get in the way of the things I'd rather do, such as publishing.

And I'm hoping that, after next weekend, when we get my elderly mother settled in a retirement community, things will settle down a bit and become less hectic. That should help. I don't know if any of you have or have had someone you love start to go downhill mentally, but it is so sad . . . and extremely stressful and hard to watch and accept.

Anyway, hope you all enjoy this issue as you're preparing for the Christmas or Hanukkah season.

Results of last issue's contest, when the question was — What is the largest bookshop in the world?

The answer — Powell's City of Books is a book lover's paradise, the largest used and new bookstore in the world. Located in downtown Portland, Oregon and occupying an entire city block, the City stocks more than a million new and used books. Nine color coded rooms house over 3,500 different sections, offering something for every interest, including an incredible selection of out-of-print and hard-to-find titles. Only one entry, and it was wrong . . . and I would have awarded the entrant the top sponsor ad, but none was included with the entry, so it was invalid.

A Healthier You

The lemon has many health benefits. Like turning water into wine, the lemon, with its citric acid, quickly changes an acid condition into an alkaline one.

Lemons are useful in treating asthma, colds, coughs, sore throat, diphtheria, the flu, heartburn, liver complaints, scurvy, fevers, and rheumatism.

The energy you get from your food comes from the atoms and molecules of energy in your food. A reaction takes place as cationic food enters the digestive tract and encounters anionic digestive enzymes.

To explain further, an ion is part of a molecule con-atom or a group of atoms that carry an electrical charge. Ions which carry negative charges are "anions." Lemons are considered to be anionic, having more anions (negatively charged ions) of energy as compared to cations (positively charged ions) in their atomic structure. Saliva, hydrochloric acid, bile, and the stomach's other digestive juices are also anionic.

Lemon is one of the only foods on the planet that has more anions than cations in its atomic structure.

It should be noted that pasteurized and packaged lemon juice is cationic and, therefore, ineffective as a health remedy.

Lemons contain phosphorus, and one of their greatest properties is the ability to "digest" proteins when put on meat, poultry, fish, beans and eggs.

The lemon is an effective side-effect-free remedy for high levels of cholesterol in the body.

Excessive plaque deposits can have many side effects; sight and hearing can become significantly impaired, for example. These side effects can be reduced with lemons, and regular use will eradicate the plaque and its side effects.

These are a few lemon remedies published by Jethro Kloss in his well known book, "Back to Eden":

— For sore throat, dilute lemon juice with water and gargle frequently. Dilute one-half lemon juice with one-half water. It is even better to use straight lemon juice.

— A slice of lemon bound over a corn overnight will greatly relieve the pain.

— A slice of lemon bound over a felon (pus formation on a finger joint) will bring the pus to the surface, where it can be easily removed.

— To relieve asthma, take a tablespoon of lemon juice one hour before each meal.

— For liver complaints, the juice of A lemon should be taken in a glass of hot water one hour before breakfast every morning.

— A teaspoon of lemon juice in half a glass of water relieves heartburn.

— For rheumatism, one or two ounces of lemon juice diluted in water should be taken three times a day—one hour before meals and again at bedtime.

— In cases of hemorrhage, lemon juice diluted in water and taken as cold as possible will stop it.

— Scurvy is treated by giving one to two ounces of lemon juice diluted with water every two to four hours.

— The juice of three to four lemons a day will help check excessive menstruation. Best to take the juice of one lemon at a time in a glass of cold water.

Roasted lemons—roasted until they crack open—are given to cough and cold sufferers of all ages, and with marked success. When the lemon cracks open, the juice, with brown sugar and fresh pineapple juice, is given to the person, who will feel immediate relief. The pineapple adds its powerful digestive enzymes to those of the lemon, for disintegrating the mucus in the throat.

Finally, there are innumerable reports of cases of cataracts, which have been eradicated by using drops of one half-lemon juice and half-distilled water in the eye three times daily.

There are multifarious other benefits of the lemon as well, but there simply is not enough room in this article to go into them all.

Put Your Passions to Work for You

In their eagerness to make money online, many people jump right in before they are properly prepared. You know that to be a rocket scientist, a doctor, a brick layer, a construction worker, an office worker, or a teacher there are things you must learn, before you can work in your chosen field. You don't just jump right in unprepared.

The same applies to Internet marketing, even though there are those who'd have you believe it's just a "walk in the park" and requires no more than the belief that you can just do it. And I'll have to admit, it is a walk in the park compared to what you have to put up with in the brick-and-mortar work-a-day world, punching a time-clock and being a peon, but there are still rules you have to follow and pitfalls you must avoid to actually make Internet marketing work for you.

Most people will not make a dime online, and yet there are others who will make more in one month than most people make in a whole year. Why is that?

My answer begins with the age-old chicken-or-egg question, "what comes first the chicken or the egg"? Personally, I vote for . . . well, never mind, each argument you or I make comes back to the same old conclusion—I have no clue, and I don't think many of us do either.

But one thing I do have a clue about and know for sure is that to make mucho moolah online you must first have passion for the company products and/or service of any Internet business from which you expect to make dough.

Passion in this sense simply means that you've researched and believe in the company and its products or services. It is then that you translate that belief (or passion) into the education, excitement, and work that usually accompany passion.

I will have to say that many online entrepreneurs are so good at what they do that they ignore passion, because they can sell anything. But I'm concerned about those of you who are not so knowledgeable at working an online business successfully.

Now, I'm not trying to make anyone believe that passion is the only thing necessary. Because to be successful you must also have an appealing website, effective marketing, widespread advertising, company support, relevant keywords, etc. Those things are often learned from the company you join—but sidestep passion, and you reduce your chances for success dramatically.

Therefore, it follows that, if you have no passion for the company, and for the products and/or services it provides, again, you won't attempt to do the work you are being taught. Internet marketing work is typically not all that difficult or time consuming, but it does take motivation conjured up by passion to get you off and running with a sustained effort so that you won't stumble.

You have a great resource in the Internet search engines to search about the Internet marketing industry for business opportunities . . .    use it!

Your research should uncover a company that you like and have confidence in. It should be solid, founded on great principles, easy to understand, with great products and services that are salable, and for which you can have passion. If you don't find it, move on.

You can find the right opportunity containing the attributes identified above.

Thinking like, "Well, that one sounds good and the compensation plan is excellent, so I guess I'll start that business," does not sound like a decision based on anything even close to passion.

And remember when you hear that an Internet "guru" does that, don't be tempted, because as I said earlier, they are experienced and can sell just about anything, without being passionate about the company products and services.

Note — It should be your goal to get to the point where you can sell about anything online. That end skill and goal is a worthy one indeed.

Remember, there are other steps you must make before you step into Internet marketing, but if you don't first find the right company products and services to be passionate about, all of those other steps may just cause you a lot of frustration instead of bringing you great success.

Not being passionate about a company and its products and/or services—that has market proof that what it offers does sell—is a pitfall you simply must avoid.

The Photographer

A photographer for a national magazine was assigned to take pictures of a great forest fire. He was advised that a small plane would be waiting to fly him over the fire.

The photographer arrived at the airstrip just an hour before sundown. Sure enough, a small Cessna airplane was waiting. He jumped in with his equipment and shouted, "Let's go!" The tense man sitting in the pilot's seat swung the plane into the wind, and soon they were in the air, though flying erratically.

"Fly over the north side of the fire," said the photographer, "and make several low-level passes."

"Why?" asked the nervous pilot.

"Because I'm going to take pictures!" yelled the photographer. "I'm a photographer, and photographers take pictures."

After a long pause, the "pilot" replied: "You mean, you're not my instructor?"

Today's English Lesson

Seeing the same elementary mistakes over and over again has prompted this publisher to write an English lesson each issue. Look for some of these lessons to be repeated, because the mistakes are!

This is a very short lesson, but one much needed, as I see this error more and more all the time. It concerns the use of "who" vs. "that."

Very simply, "who" is used to refer to people. "That" is used to refer to everything else.

For example: People who live in glass houses . . .
Those who climb mountains . . .
anyone who lives in this country . . .
all who live must die . . .
the farmer who plants early . . .

Conversely: Shoot anything that moves . . .
The tree that bears fruit . . .
the flower that blooms in the garden . . .

Hardly anyone uses "who" when the context calls for "that."
but many, many people misuse "that" for "who."

A 7-Step Web Marketing Plan
by Jerry Bader

Each of the following seven steps interacts with the others to help you build an effective framework for implementing a marketing website that delivers a memorable presentation and a compelling message that furthers your sales and marketing goals.

Step 1 — What to do: Attract more Web visitors. How to do it: Decide what niche to fill by defining what your audience really wants.

The number one priority of any website marketing initiative is to attract more website visitors that, in turn, creates more sales leads and, ultimately, more sales. In order to attract these visitors, you need focus on a niche audience that will find your website material relevant enough to either pick up the phone and call you, or at least send you an email inquiry.

How to Have an Amazingly Satisfying Year
by Inez Ng

I started taking stock of my year in 2002. I found it useful at the end of the year to list what I have accomplished, what I am thrilled about, what I wished had turned out differently, what I am proud of, what I learned, what were the pleasant surprises, and the not so pleasant ones, what I want to develop as a habit, and what I want to do differently in the future.

My plan for next year is to make it the most amazingly satisfying year yet. If you follow these simple steps and do the work, you can have incredible results, too.

First Figure out What You Want.

In order for the year to be satisfying, the results and outcome of your actions have to fulfill your needs, expectations, wishes, and desires. So, naturally the first step is to figure out what those needs, wishes, and desires are.

To do that, set aside some time, find a quiet place, arm yourself with a pad and pen, and complete the exercise below. List the different areas in your life that are important to you. Here's a typical list to get you started: your health, your financial situation, your relationships, and your career. You can use these, or substitute some items, or add to them.

Next, choose one area—any one is fine, as long as it is important to you. Then list the needs and desires that you have regarding this area of your life. When you run out of needs, then move on to the next area you want to achieve results in, and start listing your needs and desires for that area.

What usually happens is that one area will trigger additional thoughts about another one. So you don't need to be systematic about this. You just want to get through all the areas you want to focus on, and get as complete a list as possible.

Now that you know your desires, convert those into outcomes that will satisfy these desires. For example, one of your desires may be to improve your financial situation. The outcome that satisfies that desire is to have a reserve fund in the bank. So go through your list of desires and define your outcomes.

Then convert your outcomes into goals. Building on our example, a goal could be to have put aside a reserve fund of $5,000 by the end of the year. Check how well you have defined your goals by verifying that they are specific, measurable, actionable, relevant, and time based. Go through your list, and convert your outcomes into goals.

My suggestion on developing goals is to try to have a selection of short-term (1-3 months), medium-term (around six months) and long-term goals (one or more years). It is important that you have all three because if your list consists only of big, hairy, long-term goals, it is hard to keep yourself motivated. But if you can celebrate accomplishing a few goals each quarter, it is much easier to keep going.

Now figure out what you have to do.

By now, you might be a little overwhelmed because you have four pages of goals. So, it is time to prioritize. Review your list, and rank the importance of each goal. Choose a simple system, like assigning them a rank of one, two, or three, with one being the most important to you.

I have to stress again that this is about what is important to YOU, not what you are expected to care about, or what society thinks should be important to you. Unless you truly care about the outcome, you will find it hard to motivate yourself when it comes time for action.

Now select the most important goals you want to work on. Don't discard the rest; just put them aside until you have time for them. Now convert the goals into actions—what do you have to do to accomplish the goal?

Again, building on our example: to lay aside $5,000 in a year, you have to put aside $420 a month. Can you do that? How? One action might be to establish a monthly budget that enables you to set aside that amount each month. Or another action might be to review your monthly expenses and decid what you can cut out to enable you to contribute to the reserve fund.

Put as much detail as you can in your actions. Make sure that you give yourself deadlines for completing them. If you have an ongoing action (like working out three times a week), assign yourself the action to develop a tracking system to let you know whether you are sticking to that commitment or not.

Now you have your road map for the whole year. All you have to do is to take the actions needed for success. Do a check quarterly to see how you are progressing. Make adjustments based on what you have done and what might have changed in your life (nothing should be set in stone). Celebrate all your successes along the way, and just keep going. At the end of the year, you will be thrilled at all that you have accomplished, and how good you will feel.
